SunnO)))'s Creative Journey: Hiking, Music, and the Power of Nature (2026)

The Power of Nature and Creative Rituals: A Conversation with SunnO)))

In a world often dominated by urban landscapes and fast-paced lives, the story of SunnO))) and their connection to nature offers a refreshing perspective. This drone metal duo, Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, have an intriguing relationship with hiking and the outdoors, which has not only influenced their music but also their creative process.

The Creative Spark

For Anderson, the pandemic served as a catalyst. He realized the importance of reconnecting with nature, a realization that led to a daily ritual of hiking and exploring. O'Malley, on the other hand, has a long-standing connection with the mountains, especially the Alps, which became a place of contemplation and a regular part of his life.

"It became important to my mental wellbeing to be able to get out, hike, and see nature," Anderson reflects.

Megalithic Landscapes and Walking as Therapy

O'Malley's introduction to megalithic landscapes, thanks to his friend Julian Cope, added a spiritual dimension to his walks. Exploring these ancient sites became a way to connect with history and nature simultaneously. Anderson, too, finds solace in nature, especially in Los Angeles, where he resides. The city's proximity to diverse natural environments offers a unique escape.

Recording in Harmony with Nature

When it came to recording their new album, the duo chose a studio surrounded by forests, a decision that would prove influential. They opened the studio doors, literally and metaphorically, inviting the sounds of nature into their music. Engineer Brad Wood placed microphones outside, capturing the creek and the trees, creating a documentary-like record.

"We brought the environment into the studio, taking away the veil that separates us from the outdoors," O'Malley explains.

The Creative Mind and Nature's Influence

For both Anderson and O'Malley, hiking is a form of meditation and personal therapy. It's a space where they can think, listen, and connect with their surroundings and music. Anderson even shares a mystical experience involving an owl and a melodic drone, a moment that left him open to the mysteries of nature.

"I look at hiking and walking as meditation and as personal therapy," Anderson says.

The Impact of Nature on Creativity

O'Malley believes that walking and shifting awareness to one's surroundings is essential for creativity. It's a practice that has made him a better artist and a more engaging person. The duo's experience with the LA wildfires added an intense perspective to their recording session, a reminder of life's fragility and the importance of every moment.

"There's an intensity to the music, and that's where it comes from," Anderson adds.

SunnO)))'s story is a testament to the power of nature and the rituals we create to connect with it. Their music, influenced by these experiences, offers a unique and profound listening experience.
